a sci-fi noir that is both abstract and completely logical (get it?), alphaville is one of the most original movies i have ever seen. it is unbelievably beautiful and daring: scenes are multi-minute long, expertly coreographed tracking shots; yesses mean nos, and visa versa; characters don black, black sunglasses and blow bright white smoke, and the b+w negative is used; and an omnipresent, omnicient computer, voiced by a modded post-tracheotomy-esque voice box, narrates. somehow, it all works. perfectly.
classics scale: 8.5/10

PLEASE NOTE: there is a major difference between the scale with which modern movies are being judged and the "classics scale" with which the...well...good ones are being judged.
